Oral Care

It is essential for individuals to have a good set of teeth especially for cleft individuals. We are born with two sets of teeth; baby teeth and permanent teeth. For a cleft baby, good oral hygiene is very much encouraged as it provides a basis for the growth of the permanent teeth. Extra care must be given during teeth brushing to ensure clean and healthy teeth. When the first baby tooth appears, clean it with the end of a soft towel/ cloth or use the end of a cotton bud. When the baby is old enough to have his/her teeth brushed, use a soft bristle small toothbrush. Make teeth brushing a fun activity so the child can learn and imitate the act of brushing.

In addition, encourage the baby to drink water after having milk. Try not to encourage drinking sugary drinks or juice and avoid sweets and chocolate. Sweet treats in between meals are also a bad habit. Bringing the child for a dental check-up every six months is also encouraged. Ensure that the first visit to the dentist is enjoyable and a positive experience as a cleft child will often be visiting the dentist as he/she grows up. In addition, avoid visiting the dentist only when you’re in pain as this might give the child a traumatic experience.
